BUILDING A BRAND
Starting any business is a tall chore for those that are committed to doing it properly. Our priorities related to our brand were critical and would set the foundation for everything to follow. Here was our focus in creating the Fleet brand:
- Embrace key components of Charleston’s history;
- Incorporate the maritime influence Charleston has as a world port;
- Pick colors that convey the lifestyle of the people of Charleston.
Next, our focus shifted to developing a strong communication plan. Key to that plan was a dynamic website that would grow as we did. We connected with the great team at Modern Sports Group and they delivered. Key functionality we built into our website are:
- Great graphics to enhance a fan’s experience;
- Key news section so fans always know what it is going on with the Fleet;
- Being able to feature our match schedule, scores, and standings in a user-centered format;
- The ability to sell tickets and merchandise online.
Finally, with our branding in place and our website launched, we we were able to focus more on the field. A great environment was key in creating the kind of experience that fans would want to be a part of. Key factors that went into our operational programming:
- Playing in soccer specific stadiums that are built to feature our sport;
- Walk-up ticketing for those who decide to come to game at the last moment;
- A great surface to help showcase the great players that come to play for the Fleet;
- Staffing each event to make sure that our staff to attendee ratio was great for a pleasant day of watching great soccer.
May would see the Fleet complete final preparations and acclimate a talented roster. Players would arrive from all over the country to join the Fleet squad. If they only knew the success that awaited them…
June would see the first-ever fleet match held at home here at Patriot’s Point. It would be a well attended match that would result in the first of many wins for the Fleet as they beat the Lake Norman Eclipse by a score of 1-0.
June would see the Fleet go an impressive 7-0!
July would bring with it great challenges and great stakes to play for.
The final month in the regular season would see the Fleet post a solid 2-1 record with the only loss being to the Carolina Rapids 0-1. This would result in the Fleet winning the Carolinas Division Championship in their first season!
Carolinas Division Winners
The Fleet Inaugural Season would see them post an undefeated record at home.
A tremendous accomplishment for any club in any season, but especially for the Fleet it its first year!
What a squad!
The 2017 Fleet will certainly go down as the team that got it all started and steered into the right direction. With 22 players rostered over the course of the season from all over the country, the stage is set for the future Fleet teams to make their mark.
