CHARLESTON, S.C. – It was an incredible weekend of WPSL soccer as the top four teams in the South Region descended upon Patriots Point to battle it out for the honor of being crowned a champion. Beaufort County FC, Gulf Coast Texans and FC Surge would join the Charleston Fleet in semifinal round action.

In the first of two semifinal matches, the Gulf Coast Texans would defeat Beaufort County FC by a score of 2-0. It was a blazing hot affair as both teams melted under the late afternoon heat, but the Texans proved to be the sharper of the two teams in front of goal and two second half strikes would send the Gulf Coast Texans to the final.

The second semifinal featured the Carolina Division champion, Charleston Fleet, playing host to the Sunshine Division representative, FC Surge. It was an even one from the outset as both teams tested the other team’s GK early. Fans would have to wait until to 71st minute to see Abby Timm break the deadlock and put Charleston into the lead. A Raymara Barreto wonder strike with a few minutes remaining would seal the Fleet win and book a ticket into the championship match the following day.

The WPSL South Region Final would see the Gulf Coast Texans (8-0-2), a perennial championship contender, versus the upstart Charleston Fleet (10-1). Both teams would trade punches evenly throughout the match and it wasn’t until midway through the second half that Texans would take the lead on a great individual effort from Alex Thomas. The Fleet would push for an equalizer and come close on numerous occasions, but the Texans would stand firm and claim the WPSL South Region Championship for the 3rd time in 6 years with a narrow 1-0 win.
