For Immediate Release:
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Fleet opened their 2017 WPSL campaign in flying fashion as the team swept to victory over the weekend in both matches.
On Saturday, June 3, the Fleet hosted the Carolina Rapids in its inaugural match and won 1-0 on a goal scored by Sarah Cardamone. Under blue skies and in a festive atmosphere at MUSC Health Stadium, the Fleet put on an impressive display in front of over 1000 fans. Head Coach Sarah Michner was happy with the performance. “After only a couple of training sessions together, I was very pleased in our fight and approach to the game. It’s not easy to get 22 new players on the same page really quickly so I’m proud of the effort and excited for what’s ahead.”
Sunday, June 4 brought more dynamic play from the Fleet in its game against the Lake Norman Eclipse and it was a Breanna Dewaal cracker that was the difference in the end. The Fleet’s attack sprung to life over the course of the 90 minutes and there were many positives to take away from the match. But, it was the collective effort defensively that was most impressive over the weekend. “Two shutouts in two games is fantastic. We moved players in and out of the lineup all weekend, but our defensive presence was really consistent throughout.”
The Fleet will embark on their first road trip of the season as they head to North Carolina to take on the Greensboro Lady Dynamo and Oak City United this weekend, June 10th and 11th. Fans can follow the action on our Twitter account @charlestonfleet
